American Idol – Season 8

AI4

I still have yet to miss an episode of the 8 seasons of American Idol.  I'm interested in every aspect from the contestants' talent all the way down to analyzing the marketability of each singer.  I even listen to the judges' criticisms to figure out why they say what they're saying, and if they expect a certain response to their words.

I was impressed with this years' talent, agreeing that it was the most gifted season to date.  Up to just a couple weeks ago I even thought it was obvious who was the most talented 5 of the Top 10.  American seemed to have gotten it correct (in my opinion).  I also think it goes without saying that these last 5 have the potential to walk away at any point and have a successful career as an artist.

But once it came down to these final 5 talents it became anybody's game.  The teenie-boppers who cast multiple votes each week would probably be the determining factor to get someone bumped off of the show every Tuesday night with a small margin.  Matt G was the first to depart the 5, and then last night it was Allison I.  Again, my opinion says American got it right to leave these final 3 to battle it out.

1.  You've got the gospel/motown-esque Danny Gokey who has shown himself to be very versatile with the exception of ROCK week.  He seems to be comfortable in his skin, and in the performing spotlight.  He is likable.

2.  Then there's the emo(ish) Adam Lambert who comes off as experienced on the stage.  With a broadway/musical style he performs each week as an edgy personality.  He has a strong, accurate voice but tends to be a bit shreak-y at times.  He has a strong following but more of a favorite to a limited crowd.

3.  Thirdly comes Kris Allen, who often gives off a boy-ish grin and is seen as lacking confidence by Simon Cowell.  He has a style different from the other two and seems like he would be likable to a much broader audience – old and young.  In my opinion he has grown each week and emerged as a creative artist as well as a consistent voice.
My thoughts on how Season 8 should end:
Adam should go home this next week.  He had a great run and will land a record deal as well as go on to perform more in live venues than recording studios.

Danny should be the runner up of Season 8.  While he has been my favorite over the majority of the weeks, he has become less original while remaining consistent.  Danny will be very successful in his obvious genre and maybe beyond.  He's great.

But it is Kris who shows the most potential to me.  He seems to be the most marketable, and probably has so many more things to grow into with being a singer/artist.  He has proven himself to be a talented arranger while also being a decent instrumentalist.  He will probably have a larger instant fan base, while developing as an artist over the next several years will only grow his listeners.  Plus the dude can just flat out saaaang.

Weekend in Louisiana

Had a great time in Louisiana this past weekend.  On Saturday we participated in the March of Dimes, March for Babies in Lafayette with Blanche and her extended family.  We spent the morning at the community event, and then in the afternoon had a family cook-off with lots of great dishes.

On Sunday we made our way to Mandeville to see my cousin Angela who is in visiting from Australia.  I was able to meet for the first time her 8 month old daughter Giselle, who is on her first visit to the states.  After a great time with family and on the way out of town I was able to catch Dave and his fam for a few minutes at their home.

This week started off very quickly and is heading towards this next weekend the same way.  Upon my return from a weekend without the boys and missing them terribly, I've been able to have them with me all week.  Austin started off the week with strep throat but has recovered well.  There's nothing like receiving big hugs after not seeing them for a few days.  Jackson woke up earlier than me the first morning here and started in on his drawing and cutting.  I woke up to the below picture on my dresser that he made for me while sleeping.  They are all individual cut-out shapes that he pieced together to spell it out (I [heart] U).

I love you

What a week!

(In bulletpoints…)
~Easter weekend was great.  It was spent mostly outdoors at the Lake House in Toledo Bend with family.  It was a time of fishing, eating incredible food, and resting.  Pics coming soon.

~I was accepted into the Certification Program to become an educator in the state of Texas.  After completing a few courses this summer, I should be in the classroom teaching this fall

~LSU Football is gearing up for their annual Spring Game on Saturday.  I will probably regret not attending.

~American Idol will have another week of a Top 7, as Matt Giraud was given another chance by the judges.  2 contestants will go home next week.

~It's been a week since I last blogged.  Mostly it was because this week was a busy one.  But after a few days I wanted to see what it would to me – since I do it so regularly.  Thanks to all of you who actually read my posts and say hi.  I enjoy hearing from you.  You can also keep up with my goings on by subscribing to my posts on Twitter – at http://twitter.com/thisismatt

Nothing is certain but death and TAXES

After almost 2 weeks of worry, I finally received my completed tax packet from my accountant (who shall remain nameless) in Louisiana.  He addressed it to my former address, and I was questioning the reliability of the USPS Mail Forwarding system.  Luckily, the little yellow label eventually brought it to me, and with my signature, I can now file my paperwork on time.  I was already beginning to eye the extension I would have had to file for a loss of my W-2.

Hooray for refunds (even though it is really too small to even cheer for).

March Madness!

Pmac

March Madness begins today!  While I'm a die-hard college FOOTBALL fan, this month is also high on my list when it comes to being a follower of sports.  It's a great time of year – think about it:  winter is fading away, spring breaks are taking place, St. Patty's Day bring is bringing out the green, and of course:  the unpredictable, always exciting NCAA Tournament.  It's a time to get pumped.  It's a time to fill out your bracket.  It's a time for MADNESS!

I'm not writing this to push my team on you.  I have several brackets filled out with different teams running away with the whole dance.  Through this, I am reminded how we can get so excited about something so insignificant to the events in the big picture our lives.  This tournament will have zero affect on my future.  But it will bring me a little bit of joy on the way.

I am currently in a place in my life where I'm trying to plan for my future (career, schooling, finances, etc.), and figure out how to get to wherever that is.  Being patient in getting there is difficult, but the waiting is neccessary to the outcome of the journey.  These teams participating in the tournament have no guarantee on where they'll be in a week but they are ready for the challenge and competition of it all.  They are pursuing a dream and taking it one game at a time.

I read a quote this week and have been inspired myself to slow down and get the most out of the journey that I'm on.  Many times we need to tell ourselves to take it "game by game" before we properly reach the end of the tournament.

"Our dreams bring meaning to our lives.  Whether or not we achieve the dream is inconsequential…the path to the dream is the dream itself."

Bring on the Madness!

What's going on… Friday

-It's been a couple of rainy, cold days here in central Texas and will continue to be into the weekend.  I don't love it, but I'm trying to enjoy the cool temps before the summer heat arrives.

-LSU began their spring practices yesterday.  I can't wait to see their much improved defense as well as how this QB situation unfolds. Here are some pics from Baton Rouge.

-March Madness is here!  There are always exciting games to watch as we get ready for tourney time.  Last night was an incredible example as Syracuse overcame UConn in 6OTs.  Can't wait to fill out my bracket!

-7 more days until I attempt my first 5K.  The weather has prevented my running for the past few days.  Hopefully I will get a few in sometime during the week.  I have no idea how I'll do.

-SOOO glad the weekend is here!

Birthdays are overrated

Yes, it's my birthday today.  I am now 31 years OLD.  I haven't been a huge fan of the "day of births" celebration since my 20s have come to a close.  I've come to terms with the fact that I am now old.

Here is a pleasant memory that is now exactly 1 year old, when Sean came to visit me for my 30th birthday.

Jackson's new glasses

Due to his astigmatism and nearsightedness, Jackson has new glasses.  So far, he's excited about them and has no problem wearing them all day.  I wonder how it will affect him as he participates in sports, as well as deals with kids who like to pick on one another.

What's going on… Tuesday

1.  U2's new album, No Line On the Horizon, is out now – and they're playing live on Letterman ALL WEEK!  …nice.

2.  I watched the very first Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night as he moves into Conan O'Brien's former slot.  He's no Letterman or Conan – but hopefully he'll improve with time.

3.  LSU Football has scheduled home-and-home games against West Virginia beginning in 2010.  It's about time we play BCS teams of another conference.  Hopefully we'll add a Big 12 or PAC-10 game in the near future.

4.  LSU Basketball is ranked in the top 12 and is the regular season SEC champs.  LSU Baseball is #1 in all the polls.  What a great time to be a Tiger.

5.  I registered to run a 5K – Komen Race for the Cure later this month.  I'm not a marathon runner by any means but I try to jog a few times a week.  I guess I'll find out just how much running I can handle when I show up for this race.
